FAST Alpha and Bravo Deploy
DEA leadership initially handpicked Special Agents for the FAST program based on their unique expertise, including prior service in Operation Snowcap. These agents became the first in DEA history to operate on the frontlines of an active war zone — a testament to their exceptional skills and readiness. The experience gained during these early deployments helped shape the future of FAST operations.
Known as the "first generation" of FAST, the initial teams were small but highly capable. Before deployment, agents completed an intensive two-week training course led by instructors from the CIA and U.S. Special Forces, focusing on tactical operations, situational awareness, and critical decision-making. Teams of six were then deployed to Afghanistan for 90 to 120 days.

As the program grew, FAST expanded from its original two teams — Alpha and Bravo — to include Charlie, Delta, and Echo, with members permanently assigned to their respective teams.
On April 5, 2005, DEA's first two FAST teams-Alpha and Bravo-deployed to Afghanistan. Operating in austere conditions with limited equipment, agents quickly forged strong bonds with U.S. and international military forces and conducted a wide range of counter-narcotics operations, drawing on their investigative training and expertise.
