The Other War in Vietnam

The Other War in Vietnam is a program in which two esteemed figures in law enforcement, retired DEA special agents Steve Greene and Hoàng Ly, recount their remarkable story, which took place during the Vietnam War. When they met in 1968, Hoàng was the captain of the Vietnamese Narcotics Bureau, and Steve was a U.S. narcotics agent sent to Vietnam to address the problem U.S. personnel were having with illicit narcotics.

Steve and Hoàng worked closely for years, facing the daunting task of interdicting drug trafficking until the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. At the end of the war, as the Viet Cong took over South Vietnam, Hoàng was in the U.S., unable to return to get his family to safety. Steve had remained behind to look after the family and got them out on Hoàng’s behalf, eventually reuniting them in the U.S. Hoàng went on to become a U.S. citizen. He then became a DEA Special Agent, and Steve later became the Administrator of the DEA.

More than 50 years have passed, yet their friendship remains as strong as ever. This is not just a story of two agents, but a powerful narrative of brotherhood that has stood the test of time.
